Bio Prof. Dr. Peter EsterBio Prof. Dr. Peter Ester

Dr. Peter Ester (Utrecht, June 5, 1953) is a Dutch sociologist and since June 7, 2011 member of the Dutch Senate. In this Chamber he is focusing at economic affairs, agriculture, social affairs and employment, finance, infrastructure, environment and Kingdom Relations.

Dr. Ester studied from 1970 to 1976 sociology at the University of Utrecht in 1984 and received a Phd. in economics at the Erasmus University Rotterdam.

From 1976 to 1984 he carried out scientific work at the Free University of Amsterdam, from 1984 to 1989 had a leading role in the Social and Cultural Planning Bureau and from 1989 to 1999 was professor of sociology at the Catholic University.

Subsequently he was twice president of a research institute, from 1991 to 1998 of the Institute for Social Science Research and Consultancy (IVA) and from 1999 to 2010 of the Organization for Strategic Labour Market Research (OSA).

On behalf of the latter he was for a short period until November 2009 extraordinary professor of labor, culture and policy at the University of Utrecht. He is also lecturer on labor issues since early 2010 at Rotterdam University.

Dr. Ester has had a range of additional functions. He was from 2007 to 2008 a member of the Committee on Employment, which was engaged in the Dutch labor system of the future, and he was from 2009 to 2011 Deputy ‘Crown-member’ of the Dutch Economic and Social Council (SER).
